Final Acts of Appeasement
The End of the League happened for many reasons:
Germany Rearms - Militarizes the Rhineland
Appeasers Reaction:
The Sudentenland:
- They did not respond to Ethiopia
- Economic Sanctions were threatened
- Hoare-Laval plan gives Italy most of Ethiopia, this plan undermined the League
- People lost interest in the League when Mussolini completed his conquest
- This all signalled the end of the League (existed until 1945)
Germany Rearms - Militarizes the Rhineland
- Hitler introduced forced conscription in 1935
- France, Britain, and Italy form the Stresa Front in order to condemn Hitler
- Mussolini signed the naval agreement in 1935 with Hitler (sign of a forming friendship)
- March of 1936, Hitler remilitarizes the Rhineland which breaks the Locarno pact
- Versailles forbade a unification of Germany and Austria
- 1934 Dollfuss Affair, when Nazis assassinate Austrian Chancellor
Appeasers Reaction:
- Britain did nothing but warned Schuschnigg not to cause any trouble
- The French did nothing without the British
- Italy was the only country that objected, until Mussolini gave his approval
- "I'll never, never, forget this, no matter what happens" - Hitler to Mussolini, which he followed through on
The Sudentenland:
- Ethnic German area of Czechoslovakia where 3.5 million Germans lived
- Br. P.M. Neville Chamberlain wanted Czech leader, Benes to give up the Sudentenland in a hope to prevent the war
- Neville Chamberlain and the Munich Agreement, tries to prevent the second world war
- Chamberlain proclaims "Peace for our Time", signed by Hitler
- Hitler goes on to take over all of Czechoslovakia
- May of 1939, Greater Germany
